Faculty are often required to measure the impact of their research. Business Library staff can do a cited reference search on your publications and those of your peers. Please contact Michael Enyart at 263-3902 or by email regarding this service.

Course Reserves

Electronic Reserves

The Business Library provides an electronic course reserves service for faculty, TA's and other instructors who teach classes in the School of Business. Students can access these materials via MyUW. To place material on electronic reserve: Bring clean, single-sided photocopies to the Business Library's Circulation Desk and fill out the blue "Business Library Reserves" form. The library staff will scan the photocopies, convert them into PDF files, and make them available on MyUW. To view the library reserves currently available for your course: Login to MyUW and click on the Academics tab. In the Library Reserves by Department module, find your department and click on "Show Course List". Click on the + sign by the course name and then the section number to see the list of reserves. Print Reserves

The Business Library offers a paper reserves service at its Circulation Desk for faculty, TA's and other instructors who currently teach classes in the School of Business.

The Business Library circulation staff will make every effort to have your reserve readings ready for students to use within 24 hours of receipt. However, at the beginning of the semester, there may be a backlog of materials and the wait may be longer.

The Library does not photocopy materials for course reserves. Please provide the number of copies you want to be placed on reserve. For courses with large enrollments, we recommend that you place several copies on reserve.

When you bring your materials to the library, fill out the blue "Business Library Reserves" form available at the Circulation Desk.

We can provide your classes with workshops on the best databases and other resources for the projects or papers that your students are assigned. We offer course-related instruction for Business School and non-Business School classes. A teaching room in the upper level of the library is available or, if you prefer, we can come to your classroom.

Photocopy Services

The Business Library maintains a self-service copy machine behind the Circulation Desk for faculty and their designates who need to copy library materials. It does not require a debit card.

The Business Library can provide faculty with photocopies of materials (journals, book chapters, etc.) that are in the Business Library. Please contact Cathy Young regarding this service.

Research Databases

Board Practices / Board Pay 1999-2002

Produced by the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC), this resource has analyzed the latest structure and pay practices of approximately 1,200 companies in the S&P 500, MidCap, and SmallCap indexes, to produce an in-depth study of U.S. boards. This comparative study charts and graphs numerous board features by index, by revenue band, and by economic sector. Extensive tables detail the structure and pay of each company's practices and compensation program e.g. (Practices, Independence, Size, Audit Committees, Nominating Committees, Compensation Committees, Independent Chair, Diversity, Pay). The data exists in excel spreadsheets for each year.

Compact D/SEC

This resource consists of data from various SEC filings. The current version is available on Thomson Research (formerly Global Access). We also receive the monthly discs and have these from 1989 to date. Some of the SEC data that can be searched are:

Compustat

The Compustat database contains fundamental financial and market data for over 10,300 US companies. Compustat also includes data for over 7,600 inactive companies. Some of the subsets are:

Corporate Restructuring Databases - Bankruptcies

This resource has two databases. The Full Detail database provides over
200 items on all U.S. public companies that have $10 million or more in assets and have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection or companies with assets over $50 million that have had a default or an exchange offer at a substantial discount to face value. The Full Detail database is updated monthly. The Limited Detail database covers from 1980 to 1990 and is not updated.

CRSP: Center for Research in Security Prices

CRSP provides monthly and annual updates of 2 databases; end-of-day and month-end. These contain price, volume and return data on NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq common stocks with basic market indices.

Important facts regarding CRSP Stock Data:

    • Annual Updates: Ready in March.

    • End-of-Day and Month-End Data: NYSE/AMEX: High, low, bid, ask, closing price, trading volume, shares outstanding, capital appreciation, income appreciation, total return, year-end capitalization, and year-end capitalization portfolio. Nasdaq data also includes: closing bid, ask, number of trades, historical traits information, market maker count, trading status, and NASD classification.

    • History: NYSE - monthly data begins December 1925, daily July 1962. AMEX - both monthly and daily data begin July 1962. Nasdaq - both monthly and daily data begins December, 14 1972.

    • Identifying Information: Complete Name History records for each security containing all historical: PERMNO, PERMCO, CUSIPs, exchange codes, ticker symbols, SIC codes, share classes, share codes, and security delisting information. Offering seamless and accurate time series analysis, CRSP data includes unique permanent issue and company identifiers, PERMNO and PERMCO.

    • Distribution Information: descriptions of all distributions, dividend amounts, factors to adjust price and shares, declarations, ex-distributions, record and payment dates, and security and company linking information.

CRSP Indicies
The CRSP Stock File Indices are provided for four frequencies: daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual. There are five groups of securities for which indices are calculated: the individual NYSE, AMEX and Nasdaq markets, and the NYSE/AMEX and NYSE/AMEX/Nasdaq market combinations. Value weighted returns, with and without dividends, as well as equal-weighted returns, with and without dividends, are calculated for each index.

CRSP/COMPUSTAT Merged Databases
The CRSP/COMPUSTAT Merged Databases (CCM) contain CRSP Link, a link between primary identifiers unique to CRSP and Standard and Poor's Compustat®. CCM data are packaged with Standard & Poor's Compustat fundamental financial information reformatted into the CRSPAccess database format containing: utilities, C and FORTRAN 77 random access libraries, sample programs, and installation support for CRSP and COMPUSTAT data. The link enables researchers to query both CRSP's and Standard and Poor's Compustat's® historical databases with a high degree of accuracy.

    • Annual Updates: Ready in August

    • Monthly and Quarterly Updates: Ready in the first half of the following month (e.g. September data would be available by the 16th of October).

    • Annual and Quarterly Data: The COMPUSTAT data include more than 340 annual and 120 quarterly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Flow of Funds, and supplemental data items covering over 11,000 US and Canadian active companies and 9,400 inactive companies.

    • History: Available from 1950

    • Linking Information: CRSP's PERMNO and PERMCO are linked to COMPUSTAT's GVKEY.

CRSP US Treasury Databases
CRSP provides 1.5 million end-of-day price observations for 3,244 US Treasury bills, notes and bonds since 1961. The monthly database contains 101,986 prices for 5,136 issues since 1925.

Important facts regarding CRSP US Treasury data:.

    • Annual Updates: Ready in March.

    • History: Daily data begins on June 14, 1961. Monthly data begins on December, 31 1925.

    • Identifying Information: Unique CRSP Identifier (CRSPID), CUSIP, maturity date, Coupon rate, and other items, sorted by CRSPID.

    • Quote Data: Bid, ask, and source. Performance Data: Accrued interest, yield, return and duration.

    • Debt Data: Debt outstanding, total and publicly held.

    • Fixed Term Indices Files: Performance of single Treasury issues at fixed maturity horizons.

D&B Million Dollar Database

The D&B Million Dollar Database is one of the oldest business directories. It provides information on 11.9 million company records with employment figures; 10.0 million company records with sales figures and 15.6 million executive names. A good source for company names and address for surveys.

The Data and Program Library Service (DPLS) is the central repository of data collections used by the social science research community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Its mission is to promote academic research by facilitating the use of secondary research materials. The collection includes major surveys from a variety of distributors, U.S. government data, and locally produced archival datasets.

Dow Jones Averages

The Dow Jones Averages are comprised of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and the Dow Jones Utility Average (DJUA). The DJIA, the best known U.S. stock index, and the DJTA, the oldest U.S. stock index were created by Charles Henry Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company.

Currently there are 30 stocks in the Dow Jones Industral Average, which represents about one-fifth of the value of all U.S. stocks. The Dow Jones Transportation Average includes 20 stocks, and there are 15 stocks in The Dow Jones Utility Average.

ExecuComp

Standard & Poor's ExecuComp is a unique database for effective executive compensation analyses. This Compustat database includes data that “cover current, historic and total compensation, executive options and compensation of industry peers and comprehensive and objective executive compensation on the top officers of more than 1,900 companies. Compustat data is unique in that it is standardized. Standardizing the data ensures that comparability exists among similar types of data items as well as financial results in current and prior time frames. The ExecuComp report library accesses more that 100 up-to-date compensation and financial items from 1992 to 1998.

FDIC: Research Information System

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) database contains financial data and history of all entities filing the Report Of Condition and Income (Call Report) and some savings institutions filing the OTS Thrift Financial Report (TFR). These entities include Commercial banks, savings banks, or savings and Loans (The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Database p.1).

First Call Consensus Earnings

Data consists of summary information of consensus earnings forecast from 1990 to 2001 and conference calls from 1995 to 2001. Data exists in SAS datasets on a local server. The researcher must obtain any updates to the data directly from First Call (see discussion on WRDS).

Fixed Investment Securities Database (FISD)

The Fixed Investment Securities Database (FISD) for academia is a comprehensive collection of publicly offered U.S. Corporate bond data. Issue detail on over 100,000 corporate, U.S. Agency, U.S. Treasury and supranational debt securities. The database has over 400 fields of data. With FISD there are the terms and conditions on over 100,000 debt securities. Using the query front- end application, you can research market trends, deal structures, issuer capital structures and other fixed income debt research.

Global Corporate New Issues

New Issues databases provide authoritative coverage of global equity issues,
Eurobonds, U.S. Private Placements, and more -- giving you the same critical information used by leading investment banks and top financial publications. The New Issues databases answer questions like these:

    • How many bond issues offered by French companies were managed by foreign underwriters?

    • Who is the leading underwriter of Hong Kong rights issues?

    • Which Latin American telecommunications companies have completed direct offerings?

    • What other issues will be coming to market during the week you're expecting to launch an issue?

    • Which IPOs came to the U.S. market at, above, or below original price range?

Institutional Ownership

This database provides comprehensive institutional ownership and account profile information for fixed income and equity securities. This resource allows users to find holders of a specific bond or deal, issues within a particular state, or view the entire portfolio of a specific account.

Morningstar

Morningstar Principia Pro is a mutual fund advisory service. It covers over 1,500 mutual funds and includes such data as fund objective, recent price and dividend information, ten years of performance figures, background on portfolio composition, portfolio analysis, risk and return analysis, and Morningstar ratings. Data is updated on a quarterly basis. This resource will provide historical performance data on Mutual Funds.

Access: Morningstar is available on one computer in the Business Library.

 

Philadelphia Stock Exchange

The Philadelphia Stock Exchange founded in 1790 is the oldest organized stock exchange in the nation. As one of North America's primary marketplaces for the trading of stocks, equity options, index options and currency options, the PHLX continues to be a market leader in the development and introduction of innovative new products and services.

The PHLX trades more than 2,800 stocks, 740 equity options, 12 sector index options, and 100 currency pairs. On the equity floor, PHLX's PACE (Philadelphia Automated Communication and Execution) system was one of the first automated equity trading systems on any exchange.

The PHLX's Semiconductor Sector (SOX) Index Option has become one of the most actively traded sector index option offered by any exchange, and serves as a widely quoted benchmark of the high-tech industry. Additionally, the Oil Service Sector (OSX) is the industry's most successful new sector index option. Furthermore, the PHLX's Gold/Silver Sector (XAU), KBW Bank Sector (BKX) and Utility Sector (UTY) are established in a highly competitive environment of other indices, as leading industry indicators.

In perhaps one of the most important innovations since listed currency options themselves, the PHLX has created a unique market structure for the trading of currency options. Titled the United Currency Options Market (UCOM), unprecedented flexibility is provided for with the availability of both standardized and customized currency options. Customized currency options offer choice of expiration date, strike (exercise) price, premium payment and any combination of 10 currencies currently available for a total of 100 possible currency pairs.

Pratt's Stats

The Pratt's Stats database has compiled details on approximately 4,300 private and closely held business sales from 1991 to present ranging in deal price from under $1,000,000 to $1,000,000,000. Pratt's Stats compiles and reports information on approximately seventy data points on these sales. The industries represented in Pratt's Stats are no less diverse, as evidenced by the roughly 600 unique SIC Codes and 800 unique NAICS Codes. Pratt's Stats is used by a wide variety of merger and acquisition professionals including, business appraisers, business brokers, investment bankers and venture capitalists. Pratt's Stats collects it's data from intermediaries across the country and the actual companies involved in the deals.

RDNA

The RDNA database is a sister to RECAP and is one of the premier sources of business information in the biotech industry. This database provides the following information on biotechnology companies:

Alliances: Contains records of over 10,000 biotech alliances covering the history biotech partnering up to the most recent press release. This also maintains a copy of the contracts as filed with the SEC for those deals with filing requirements (approximately 9,500). For some of those filed contracts ReCap has completed a provision-level analysis (approximately 1,200).

Clinical Trials: This part of the database displays the progress of potential biotech products currently in or having ended clinical testing for over 3000 indications. For most of these compounds, ReCap provides a expert opinion called a Clinical Capsule.

Product Sales: Provides historical sales data for 55 biotech products, with graphs of quarterly revenue and detail notes.

Valuation Histories: Graphs and tables detailing the financing history of over 550 biotech and medical device companies

Employment Agreements: Provides over 2000 unedited biotech executive employment agreements.

SDC Mergers & Acquisitions

All corporate transactions involving at least 5% of the ownership of a company where the transaction was valued at $1 million or more (after 1992, deals of any value are covered) or where the value of the transaction was undisclosed. Public and private transactions are covered. Date coverage is from 1979 to present domestically and 1985 to present internationally.

Sheshunoff Quarterly Bank Holding Company Data

Data are CD-based and includes the information from the Form Y-9s filed by all bank holding companies in the U.S. with Federal regulatory authorities. Each CD typically includes six years of annual data and the two years of quarterly data.

Stocks, Bonds, Bills & Inflation

Stocks, Bonds, Bills and Inflation provides monthly data from 1920 to 2000 for a variety of measures, such as the total, income and price returns on the S&P 500. It is in a 1 Mg. MicroSoft Excel spreadsheet.

Access: You can download the link to this data onto your computer by right-clicking on the url below and selecting "Save link as...".

TAQ: NYSE Trade and Quote Database

The Trade and Quote (TAQ) database contains intraday transactions data (trades and quotes) for all securities listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and American Stock Exchange (AMEX), as well as Nasdaq National Market System (NMS) and SmallCap issues.
